Puppies are undeniably adorable. There is no mystery as to why people love bringing them into their homes and lives. The decision to take on the responsibility of a dog is a serious one and this is why many people choose puppies rather than adopting adult dogs. There is a common misconception that an adult dog will be “set in its ways” and potentially unruly. A puppy is considered easier to train and more predictable. These beliefs are more myth than fact. Adult dogs of any age have a lot to offer their human family members. Here are just a few of the reasons why adopting a dog, particularly an older dog, is a great idea:

Know the Dog’s Personality

A puppy will change a lot as it grows and learns. Purebred dogs maintain many standard behavioral traits but each is slightly different. People purchasing a puppy will not really know what their pet will be like until it reaches adulthood. When an adult dog is adopted, its personality is already developed. Training can change habits and some behaviors but the dog’s energy level, boldness, and likes and dislikes reveal its personality. This makes it easier for people to decide if this is the pet that appeals to them.

Save Some Money

Animal shelters spay or neuter their rescues and make certain they are current on all immunizations before heading out to their new homes. This is beneficial for the new owners and only a part of why an adult dog is a more financially responsible option.

Avoid the Frustration

Housebreaking, chewing and barking non-stop are just a few of the challenges of raising a puppy. There is also the need to train all basic commands, teach them to walk on a leash and many other small details that owners of adult dogs quickly forget. There is no question that a new dog and its owner will need some time to get to know each other and adjust to certain routines. However, when the dog already understands how to ask to use the bathroom and understands what the word “no” means, life is much easier.

Know the Dog’s True Size

Many pet owners have taken in puppies and were surprised by a pet that ended up much larger or smaller than they expected. Adult dogs are at their final size other than potentially gaining or losing a few pounds over the years.

Adult dogs still want to play and have new experiences. They are just as trainable as any puppy and have a lot of love to give. Anyone that works in a shelter or has adopted a surrendered or rescued pet can attest to the fact that these animals know they have been given a second chance. They appreciate the kindness of their owner and pay them back with love and loyalty. Adopting an adult dog is not a sacrifice. It is an opportunity to welcome a wonderful animal into a home and provide a much-needed vacancy at a shelter for another homeless dog.

Take a moment to get to know some of the adult dogs at the local shelter before acquiring a puppy. Many people discover their new family member is already waiting for them.
